Green Power is energy generated from renewable sources: methane, solar, and wind.
Landfill

Methane gas is generated as a result of decomposition of solid waste in landfills.  The amount of methane generated is largely dependent on the quantity and moisture content of the waste.

Instead of allowing methane gas to escape into the air, it can be captured, converted and used as an energy source.  By generating energy from methane gas it directly reduces the amount of greenhouse gas emitted into the atmosphere.

We're currently using landfill methane gas to produce electricity at six facilities in South Carolina including the Anderson Regional Landfill, Berkeley County Landfill, Georgetown County Landfill, Horry Solid Waste Authority Landfill, Lee County Landfill and Richland County Landfill.

Anderson Regional Landfill SC, LLC
Location:  Belton, S.C.

Capacity:  3 Megawatts
Commercial Operation:  September 2008

Anderson Regional Landfill SC, LLC is the fourth of Santee Cooper's landfill - biogas powered generating stations that produces energy methane harversting.  Anderson Regional Landfill can produce 3.2 Megawatts of Green Power by using 20-cylinder engine generators.

Berkeley County Landfill
Location:  Moncks Corner, S.C.

Capacity:  3 Megawatts
Commercial Operation:  February 2011

Berkeley County Landfill is the sixth of Santee Cooper's biogas powered landfill generating stations. The Berkeley Green Power Generating Station features  two 1.6-MW Caterpillar engine generators. The power generated at the station is distributed through Berkeley Electric Cooperative’s system. Berkeley County Water & Sanitation owns and operates approximately 60 landfill-gas extraction wells at the county landfill. The gas produced will generate up to 3 MWs of electricity.

Horry Solid Waste Authority
Location:  Conway, S.C.
Capacity:  3 Megawatts
Commercial Operation:  September 2001

Horry Solid Waste Authority was the first of the "green power" landfills to come online in September 2001. The landfill currently occupies 727 acres including a Recycling Convenience Center, Composting Facility, Construction and Demolition landfill and the Municipal Solid Waste landfill. Horry County Solid Waste Authority strives "To be an independent, innovative, responsive organization that aggressively provides comprehensive, cost-effective solid waste management in an environmentally sound manner, incorporating state-of-the-art methods and technology and educating the public on responsible waste management."
